2011 Annapolis to Newport Race

"The quote “patience is a virtue” can be traced back to the poem “Piers Plowman” written in the mid 1300s…it may have seemed to some competitors that the 2011 Annapolis-Newport Race started in the 14 th century and took until the 21 st to cross the finish line," C. Thayer, AYC. Winds were light along the entire race course and the boats that found a few extra hours of wind placed. We worked hard sailing down the Bay all night, the slowest time it has ever taken me, and fought two other boats at the end of the Bay winning the award to be first in class crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and out into the ocean. Well done crew! A shot of rum was offered to the Sea Gods and shared with crew for safe passage. At Newport's Castle Hill Rock finish, after 102 hours of racing, Wharf Rat's crew missed placing by less than 1 hour or 1%! The crew stayed focused to keep the boat moving in the very light wind and cheered whenit topped 5 knots! A couple of dolphin pods swam alongside us during the race and whales breached nearby as we approached Block Island, one spouted just behind us and put quite a scare in the helmsman, Steve Ryan, it was a pretty foul odor.
